From what I understand, it is hitting the timing chain cover. It was pointed out to me that the the damper should be flush, and that you should not be able to see a certain piece of rubber. Best I can do, until I get some photos. It was explained that these will wear out on a 360 as the motor is balanced on the exterior, not internally. He had seen this one before.

Ahhhh, my 79 Power wagon (360) had the same exact thing,(oil soaked and came apart) I was gonna mention that to you but I thought they'de never design a damper like that old thing again....I guess they did eh? Glad you found it. Good luck with the repair....

Where was the oil coming from? Just wondering if I need to replace some gaskets while I am at it.

So your other buddy came over and finalized that it was in fact the dampener? That's what I was thinking as we discussed. That was a funny sound I had never heard before, but then again I didn't have my stethoscope on hand and that would have gotten me a lot closer on the initial look over.

Now comes the project of getting to it, you don't have much room!

Yes. He came by and pointed it out in a hurry, but, he rebuilds motors daily He stated he had seen the same thing on the many 360's he has rebuilt over the years. Trying to persuade him to take care of it for me, as I'll just screw it up. lol. He picked it up by listening to it, he was rattling down a list, "not the cam, not the lifters", etc., it was fun to watch. Notice I say 'watch', that is usually what I do when it comes to big repairs, beyond spark plugs, belts and hoses. lol.

Well,

Now I feel better knowing I got it down to there. I have seen them fail with the rubber hanging out of them, but never tried to diagnose them in the field. Lesson learned.

Regardless, I said dampener or timing chain and i was right......
