I wired mine to always on when the car is on. If I ever pull it apart, I'll connect to hot only when the lights are on. Wasn't thinking at the time, but it looks good nevertheless.

If you ever pull it all out, you need a security star set of bits. A reg bit won't work.

Yeah, the build sticker says it was manufactured in Nov '98. I guess either a fuse went out or something went bad with the wiring after a while that made it quit.

The only thing I'm thinking about doing to it now is adding a capacitor to it so that it will stay on for a few seconds after the dome lights go out, but for now I'm just glad to have it working.

And I'll keep that (security stars) in mind if I ever need to take it apart further, hopefully I wont need to.

LOL......

Anyway, they put them in back in the early 1990's. I don't know where you got the idea that they put them in there and did not hook them up, if that was the case they would have put a glow in the dark ring in there and not wasted the time.

Sounds more like a machine malfunction or a disgruntled employee not doing their job......LOL.......On a serious note, I have never seen this problem so it is still new to me. But again, why would it be in there and not hooked up, doesn't make sense????

You're right. It makes no sense. But that is exactly what they did.

Everything is in there, socket, bulb, harness... just not connected to anything. It was cheaper to save 2 cents and stop where they were than to redesign the entire thing without one.

My grandma's 90 plymouth car had the same green ring as my D, why would they not hook it up? $.02 for a nice convenience feature isn't bad if you ask me. My mom's 99 tahoe doesn't have anything around the ignition that lights up and it is quite annoying.

Aren't they still using them on the brand new models?

+1 SS. That is why they didn't care to go back and fix it. In 2001 they swapped the interior and it no longer mattered.
