Starting issue.
I know I am ew to this forum but I'm trying to rebuild my D that has been neglected. When I get in it (most of the time) I turn the key and it just clicks. I have replaced the battery, fuses, and terminal ends. If I put a drop light right next to the starter it helps even in the summer. Now that it is getting cold it is getting worse again. Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks for any feedback, I am tired of changing parts for no results.
There is a starter relay in the PDC. Swap it witho one of the same number like the horn and try, if the problem goes away replace the relay.
Next see if when you turn the key if the relay clicks, and this means it engages and could be the click you hear. If this is working move to the next step.
Test the voltage with the key in the on position across the battery posts (not terminals) and have someone turn the key to start (engaging the starter) and read the voltage drop across the battery posts (not terminals). If you see it drop down about 1.4 volts or so the solenoid is gone and grounding or bad contacts so you will need a starter. If nothing then it's a bad connection. Check the terminals and connecting points on both ends.
