Default Good Productive Maintenance Day

Did some maintenance today that I have always paid someone else to do int he past.
Front Diff, tranny, Xfer case, oil change.
All looked really good.
The tranny magnet basically had what I would call graphite on it, no filings or chunks.
I was surprised how easy the Xfer case was to do - as long as you have a little oil pump - otherwise filling it would bite!
Now I wonder why I ever paid someone to do that work. Too easy!

Some folks just don't have the time, tools or just don't wanna get dirty. Pops told me when I was young to learn to do it yourself and you'll save a bundle over the years.

Good job, man. A job well done like that always feels good.

Nothing like sweat equity. You save some money, get it done exactly the way you want it done, and learn about your vehicle all at the same time.....plus you can get more done, these days every penny counts.....fine job valdeez,it's good to see people try and then discover they can do certain things on their own...

+3 on the DIY comments! Nothing like taking care of your own stuff, and the extra money that stays in your pocket to go along!

My neighbor is a retired H.S. auto shop teacher. He told me the stealer and the Firestone don't normally change the tranny filters when you pay them to.
How bogus is that? Change the fluid and leave the old nasty filters in there!

if you get a flush he is correct, however if you are going to have a shop do the filters i always ask for the old ones back, chances of them getting around that w/o changing them are low.

Sharp - thats a good way to ensure they change them - as long as you know what they look like.
The last time I changed a tranny filter myself was in my 75 Dodge Coronet a very long time ago and it didn't look anything like what came out of the D.
Not to mention - I wouldn't have known that there were 2 filters.
