Unless the new housings are designed as HID reflectors, they're not only illegal, but they are also dangerous. HID bulbs create a different light pattern than a standard halogen bulb. If the reflector isn't designed for HID bulbs, it won't reflect the light properly.

I just replaced the 9007 bulbs in my Ram Sport housings and my '03 Durango. I went with Phillips Xtreme Power bulbs. MUCH better than stock AND the lousy Silverstars.

Everything I've read about Silverstars says they are crap (and when I say everything l've read, I mean everything l've read from folks who know what they're talking about). My own experience agree's. They look whiter, but they project way less light than even a standard halogen bulb.

The absolute best lighting mod you can do to your Durango is to replace the bulbs with the Xtreme Power bulbs and go with an aftermarket headlight harness. I did this with my Ram and the difference is quite pronounced (so much so that it makes the factory setup look like it's connected to a half dead battery). The Durango will be getting a harness soon.

Check out danielsternlighting dot com - there's a lot of excellent info there.

Good luck!

are you talking about the regular silverstars or the silverstar ultras. If you're talking about the silverstar ultras I completely disagree with you. They definitely aren't crap. They produce way more light (distance, width, and intensity) than normal halogens and are way whiter.

I've never used philips xtreme so I don't know how much brighter they are than silverstar ultras, but to say the silverstar ultras are crap is total bs. not to mention it would be a pita to change the headlights harness to use those bulbs

Glad you like 'em, but IMO they're overpriced crap. I've tried every kind of bulb combination humanly possible and every bulb I've ever run with any kind of blue tint have sucked. Sure they're usually 'whiter', but they are most certainly not producing 'more' light.

Obviously there is a lot of subjectivity here and if someone thinks that the SS Ultra's are better, more power to 'em. But scientifically speaking (and again, IMO) they're not. (check out this link as it talks about some of this in greater detail - http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...good/good.html)

And one other thing - you don't need to use an aftermarket harness to use the bulbs I mentioned. And it's anything but a PITA to install. Quite simple, actually. The harness simply replaces the horrible factory wiring in order to get full voltage to the bulbs. Folks have been doing this stuff for years and it works.

Again if you're happy with the SS's, great. Not looking to start a holy war over light bulbs. Just offering my opinion on the subject based on WAAY too many hours messing around with the damn things.

this is the one downfall of the internet, people can't tell the tone or inflection in your words. I'm not trying to start a holy war with you over bulbs (I have better things to start wars over lol).

compared to the stock halogens the silverstar ultras are much brighter, make more light, reach out further, and are whiter. The silverstar ultras were the best halogens you could get, as far as I knew, when I bought them. I'm not in any way doubting that the xtreme powers are brighter and better bulbs. Hell I'll probably get some of those the next time I need new bulbs. My point was just that compared to the stock halogens they are in no way crap, and they weren't overpriced to me at least, got a pair of them for $20 on ebay.

As I think about it, I might concede that the SS's were better than the stock bulbs I replaced. But to be fair, the stockers were over 7 years old when I pulled 'em out.

When I started my own 'crusade' to get better lighting for my Ram, my first stop was to the local Autozombie for SS's (like most of us). Liked the color of the light, but I wasn't impressed with the saturation (intensity?) - they seemed dim to me. So I went with PIAA (which were even more money) and again, liked the color but not the intensity. So I ended up back with a stock replacement. Definitely more yellow, but I noticed that more of the road was illuminated and reached out farther than the other bulbs (nothing earth shattering, but still). And all this was something I've done in the past with my SHO's, but the power of suggestion (everyone on the internet praising SS's) had me try it all out again with the Ram.

I had gotten to the point where I was seriously considering an HID conversion. Prices have gotten very attractive recently and again, the internet was all a glow (pun intended) with how great they work. Hell, they even have HID bulbs for my factory driving lights! Thankfully I ended up finding Stern's website and figured I'd pick his brain a bit before making yet another change (at this point, I'd also gone through a few different housings as well). All this guy does is lighting and I learned way more than I ever had the desire to, but the results speak for themselves. On the 9007 bulbs, the X-Treme power's are what he suggested. For 9004 (Ram Sport uses both bulbs), the GE Nighthawk's. These bulbs, coupled with the heavy duty harness, are flat out amazing. It was one of those eureka moments that you just want to share with anyone who has spent time trying to improve their headlights. THIS is the result I've been trying to get all these years!

Of course, not everyone is as obsessed with headlights as I am. Hell I'm only as obsessed about it due to where and when I have to drive (work on Marcellus sites that tend to be out in the boonies and pitch black). Seeing more of the road and its periphery means less chance of a deer encounter!

If you're interested, drop me a PM and I'll forward you some of what Stern and I discussed.

mine were pretty old when I replaced them too, and I replaced the old yellowed lenses with new clear ones at the same time so that was definitely a big improvement. I still believe that silverstars are better than new halogens. There is a 3 mile long stretch of straight road going through the woods (no houses or street lights of any kind, pitch black) and these shine much farther down the road than other cars seem to.

also I checked and ge nighthawks aren't available as 9007s that will fit in durangos

The Phillips X-Treme Power bulbs are the best 9007 bulbs. The Nighthawk's are for 9004's, which our Durango's don't use.
