Hello. New member here. Just purchased a 98 Durango 2 weeks ago. 5.2, 4/4. Vehicle ran great. Today I noticed what seems like slipping or kind of a surge when in overdrive. Seems to occur when there is not a large load on the engine. Usually occurs around 60 mph and 2k rpm. It will slip or surge about 200 rpm then drop back down. Checked the fluid and I had to add 3 quarts to get to max level. As I just got the truck, I'm a bit upset over this development. Is this a common issue with first gens? Or could it be something else entirely like say a throttle position sensor? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks In advance.

Does the truck jurk at all when it shifts?
Your truck sits at 2k rpms at 60mph? That seems very high to me personally...

If it's like my 99 it most likely is really around 1800 rpm at that speed.

What I think you are running into actually is a bad throttle position sensor.
$35 to $40 at the local parts store.

Should be pretty easy to replace, in fact there is more than one thread on the forum that will give you more information on the subject.

Thanks for the quick responses. To answer the first question; no it doesn't jerk when shifting. Nice and smooth. And after checking on the way home,1800 rpm at 60mph is a more accurate depiction. So potentially a tps? I was thinking that could be possible. I'm hoping that's all it is. Please keep the responses coming guys. Thanks!

I would 2nd the TPS. As long you don't have a check engine light on.

Nope no engine light on. These transmissions will usually trip a light when there is a problem, right? I'm gonna throw in a tps today and see what happens. I'll update after install. Im still open to other opinions. Thanks guys!
