Default remote starter

Yo peeps,
My wife is jealous of my remote start and the cold Chicago winter months have me thnking about getrting her one.
2001 Durango R/T 4.7l
Any gotchas about the "chip keys" with this model year?
I know mine has the module under the dash with a spare key in it because of the chip.
I don't want to go to buy one at $200 and then get a price for $450 because of the "extras". I'd like to know what I'm walking into.

as always...thanks

I know some people rag on Bulldog, but I do not have a problem with the one on my vehicle this ebay. It is a great price for this unit, the bulldogs are easy to install too.

rockgod, a couple of things

first, aftermarket remote starts/alarm systems are very common causes of electrical problems in these trucks, in all honesty it is best to stay away from them

2nd if your wife has the 4.7 in her truck she does NOT have an R/T, the R/T was the 'performance' version of this truck and came only with the 5.9l engine and awd, she most likely has an SLT trimline.

I have had a remote starter in my 2000 D with 5.9L for about 5 years now and have not had any problems. I just had a remote starter installed in my 2002 Dakota 4.7L so far it works well only had it about 2 months. I don't have a chipped key for ether. The cost was about $250 for the D and $350 for the Dakota.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Shrpshtr,
She does have the SLT...my bad.
From what you know do the electrical problems come form self installs or pro installs or either?

is there an OEM remote starter for these? That I can get installed at a dealer?
She wold really "love" me if I was to get one in her truck.

Thanks

+1 there was no factory remote start on these trucks, the issues tend to arise from any of the systems no matter how they are installed, they can be fine for years and then all of a sudden act up on you for no apparent reason.

Get your wife a remote starter she will love it or buy a garage
Call around and see who has the best price and options.

I did install a remote stater in my daughters car but I'll never do it again.

Mine is working great.

PS I would not in stall an after market alarm tho.

compustar has some good remotes been installing them for years. the new bypass modules don't need a second key under the dash. on your 01 security, door locks, etc are all controlled by one data wire making installs easy. if you want to try intalling your own remote 12 volt.com has wiring diagrams. depending what year your dodge is grey key you need a bypass kit black key no bypass. compustar also has a add on called the drone. you can start your car with your phone but it's a 35 dollar a year app.
