Default what is this thing...

Took my battery out and saw this thing...tried some more looking and it was attached to a vacuum hose which i changed, but what is it exactly?

Under the battery there is 2 things,

1. A battery temp sensor.
2. Purge solenoid.

What you are showing looks like the purge solenoid.

Thanks...does this thing give any issues or being a filter ever need replacing?

I wouldn't worry about the filter. It only opens to allow build up of fuel vapor to be vented into the throttle body for burning. If the purge solenoid goes out it just will go out and throw a code.
