Default Torque Converter Not Sataying Locked at Speed

Ok, so I bought this 2000 Durango 5.2L with 112,000 miles on the clock. Rust isn`t real bad, and the interior is pretty mint. Anyway, I took it on a 350 mile trip last week after I got it, and noticed that the exhaust note kept changing with the cruise set at anywhere from 55-70 MPH. Looked down at the tach and it will rise when the torque converter unlocks, then locks up again returning to normal. Now it is doing it almost constantly. If I give it gas, it will usually stay locked, but not always. I don`t know a dang thing about Dodge transmissions, so I`m clueless as to how they work, but I guess I`ll be learning. Other than that one problem, I absolutely love the vehicle. I`m thinking that it`s a torque converter lock solenoid or something, but was hoping to get some advice from the experts out there. Thanks in advance!

congrats on the purchase!

I think you're on the right track thinking it's the solenoid (that'd be my first guess). Master Tech is a chrysler transmission tech and should be able to help you get a better idea of what the issue is, so you may want to send him a PM

Replace the TPS on the Throttle Body. This is a classic issue.

Ya know...I think you`re right because it seems to do it a lot more with the cruise on. Thanks for the help I`ll try that first.

Ok, well had it checked on the OBD II and no codes came up. Can a throttle position sensor be bad without giving a fault code? This issue is really annoying, and it`s affecting my gas mileage. Guess I`ll have to take it to a shop if I can`t figure it out.

yes TPS can be bad w/o throwing a code, however transmission codes cannot usually be read by OBDII

Be sure and check the fluid level in neutral......If trans were a little low it would cause the converter to not be fully charged and could cause a TCC cycling condition.....

2000 with the 5.2? I thought the last year for the 5.2 was 1999.
