Default With winter here, my CV's went pop!

So I was changing the diff fluid last night and after finishing the rear up I went to go do the front...
Well as I crawled under I was coming from the passanger side and all of a sudden I looked and there is this greyish tan gease everywhere on the inside of my rim, ball joints, CV boot, everywhere!
SO I said...great, ripped cv, but I moved it around and could not find any rips or holes...hmm. So the this morning I went over to my mechanic and asked him to take a look at it. He said it must have poped out when you were driving and turning. Everything seems to be fine, you can drive it for awhile just start saving for a new one. Labor is $200 for him if I get my own part.
Two things here,
1. Does it matter what brand I buy? I was looking at rockauto and the cheapest is $45 CARDONE SELECT Part # 663232 Plus shipping of course.
2. How hard is it on a D to change the axle out? Is it just a undo these bolts, pull out, replace and bolt back up or...?
Thanks in advance!

I did the pass side on mine this weekend, wasn't too tough but
it's definately not like you were asking, undo, replace, bolt back.....the FSM I
got here(DIY section) was excellent, everything went as described,it just took a little more effort in a couple steps...put it this way.I didn't run into anything that would turn me away from doing the driver side this weekend. On the part itself,Autozone had it on the shelf,$64 with the core exchange...One down, one to go...

If I get the one from rockauto it doesn't have a core charge...I am wondering if I bring it to Shucks if they will give me some for it?
Ill have to check the DIY for that now...

Dunno,I checked a few different places, and a couple dealers. Autozone had it on the shelf and I didn't want to wait,I was going to mail order it but it wasn't any less after shipping...Anyway,iirc,it was like a $35 core,no matter I don't want the old part anyway. So what's Rock's price shipped?

says $58.58 shipped. And on rock auto it doesn't have a core charge...
Well if I could get $35 back for it, and I did it myself it would only cost a wopping $23.58! Not bad...my Mec said he would do it for $200 if I got my own part so...Not to bad if I find I cant do it myself.

They won't give you money for nothing. Just buy the part and install. I have instructions on here to instruct you step by step. Just search under my name in this 1st Durango Generation section. I would just buy both sides because on some the shaft is longer then the other side and just do both while you are down. After doing one side you will be an expert and the other side will only take you like 1 hour or so.

I think you misunderstood Roller, the core charge is additional IF you don't hand in your worn out part,Mine were $64 each, plus $35 more if I don't give the old one...but it would be nice,I kinda like your math better,I'm gonna pitch it to Autozone when I go get the other one this weekend....
What hydra mentioned is exactly what I did.His thread plus the FSM was more than enough info,It was actually a lot easier than my old Ramcharger was..you'll be able to do it....and definately do both sides, that $200 you'll save is enough to deal with your hubs IF you need them...

Oh, got it...yea I may just walk in and get them if they are on the shelf...but I went in and tried to order a fog light through them and they said it would be $85!!! And I would have to wait a week or more. Crazy! I just got it on RockAuto for $35 or so shipped...and it will be here on friday...We will see. I have to wait a month or so anyway for it cause I just got all the christmas presents and have no money for it. How long can I go before it is a real problem?

Yikes...$85 for a fog light!! They can be hit or miss sometimes but I've been really lucky when I've gone there,at my local stores anyway...I did look on AZ's website before I went in.I have 4 of them close enough and all of them had the c/v shafts in stock and they were all the same $64.No way to tell how long they last,a friend of mine went about 2 months from the time his started making noise and he wound up stuck roadside....at $64 each I'm doing mine right away,actually,1 down 1 to go...don't wait too long....avoid using 4 wheel drive if you can

yea it isn't actually making any noise at all is the thing...i just happend to be under neith and found all the gunk/oil that I think is from the boot. Weird this is the boot is on tight and has no tears or holes...hmm...We shall see. Any one know where greyish gunk would come from in that general location?
