I never had a smoky/smell with mine but in my 01 it hummed and clunked alot.. turns out my front drive shaft was seized. Dont remember how many bolts.. about 6-8 i thinkk on each end to get it out and if you move each end and they seem to stick its time for a new one Not sure if thats the fix but its worth a try. it will also create a small key jingling sound!

I have been thinking about this all week and all I can come up with is the differential is locking up or has no lube and is causing the burning smell (or the T-Case) not 100% sure but that is all I can think...
