4x4 engages when wants to

My '98 durango only goes into 4x4 when it wants to. I checked fluids and they are good. Dont know nothing about 4x4 systems. It is the stick type not the pushbutton. Can anybody help? Not sure If I left any info out.

sounds like a problem with the linkage underneath, id crawl under and have a look, my bet is the bushing are worn out and not pushing everything all the way into gear.
