Default Replacing clutch fan

Hi Guys, you've always helped me out before so here is my latest repair. Need to replace the fan clutch or clutch fan, have heard it called both. How long does this take? Do I need special tools? Your advice and instruction has always been spot-on! Thanks

a strap wrench to hold the pulley and a bfw (big ****ing wrench) to fit on the nut, unscrew the assembly from the water pump pulley.

if you have access to a spanner wrench that would be ideal, but is not necessary.

also you can download the FSM for a 2002 Durango and check page 236 (its the same for the 5.9 as the 4.7)

also a bfh (big ****ing hammer) and a length of steel pipe to tap on that nut and loosen it up some.

When I pulled the clutch fan off to install my e-fan I made a removal tool out of an old 2x4 and put a bolt through it. Was simple after that, of course I had to go through a half hour of busting my knuckles and swearing like a sailor first!!!

BTW, if you need to replace it anyway, would be a good time to ditch it in favor of an e-fan. You'll gain about 14-18 RWHP by getting rid of the parasitic clutch fan and gain 1-2 mpg to boot. ALWAYS make a repair a mod...

An air chisel also works great to remove the clutch assembly.

Just keep hitting the big nut in the direction it comes off. The ones I have done take from 5 second to about 30 seconds of hitting to remove.

Then spray Corrosion X HD (heavy duty) on the inside of the bolt before installing the new one. That way, if you ever have to remove it, it will be a lot easier. The HD is in the green can and will put a longer lasting waterproof barrier on the threads versus the red can (regular) Corrosion X.

Leave the fan belt attached and hold it back with a spanner wrench. Then put your wrench on it with a pipe and smack it really F@ckin hard with a BFH (Big F@cking Hammer) and pray you don't hit your knuckles........LOL

I put two short carriage bolts in adjacent holes, put a big screwdriver between the two and was able to loosen the nut with a wrench.

only problem with that is not all of the waterpump pulleys have holes. mine doesn't and it was a pain in the a$$ to get off. My vote for the easiest (and I use easiest loosely) way is a strap wrench with a BFW and BFH. I found it necessary to have a 2nd set of hands for this
