OK, so power steering hose had a small leak, used some power steering fluid with stop leak in it, and it isn`t leaking now. However, I keep getting a check engine light indicating power steering pressure not where it`s supposed to be. Bad sensor, or??? Power steering works fine...to trouble at all, but I did notice a good amount of fluid all over where the sensor connects to the hose, as well as the plug socket. Sprayed it out with brake cleaner, and reconnected it. Get 5 miles down the road, and check engine light comes on again. Should I just replace the sensor, or?

 

you probably clogged up the sensor w/ the stop leak

you need to do a couple of things

1) get all the fluid w/ stop leak out of the system
2) replace the leaking ps hose, its NOT that hard, you could do it in an hour or so
3) replace the ps pressure sensor (also make sure to clean the plug on the wire harness really good)

 

Yeah, I should have used my brain before putting it in there. I guess that`s what I get for listening to amateurs, instead of taking the time to research the answer myself (like I`m doing now lol).

 

I just changed my sensor very easy.The old sensor was probably the source of your leak that is where my leak was at..After changing the sensor you will need to reset the code. Follow the reset procedure in the sticky.

 

Well, that would explain why my sensor plug socket was swimming in fluid. It looks as though the cap was leaking too, so I will need to replace that...or at least the rubber cap seal. My bigger issue, is evacuating the old stop leak stuff out of the system.

I really need to get a Haynes or Chilton`s book for this vehicle, since I`m not looking at getting rid of it any time soon.

I have a 2003 Durango 4.7. I have an error code po 551.
I have recently replaced the pcm with a new one and haven't driven it 25 miles and the check light came on.
I looked at the power steering pump and hoses and there isn't a spot for the sensor there. The wiring that should have went to the sensor is tied back to the frame with factory ties. I followed the hoses to the steering rack and there isn't anything there. Is there another eason why I am getting this code ?

if its not there then my guess would be the previous owner replaced the power steering lines and got the wrong ones
