I have a 2000 Durango 4x4 SLT 5.9L w/ 100,000 miles. Yesterday my engine light came on and this morning it would not shift out of 1st gear. Any body know why. Does it need to be rebuilt or could it be something easier?

The first thing you need to do is find out why the check engine light came on. Most likely your problem is the output speed sensor or the electronic governor inside the trans. On your vehicle I believe if you cycle the key from off to on 3 times ending with the on position, either the check engine light will flash out a code, or the digital odometer will display the code.

MOre or less it may be your governor actuator switches. My 2000 did the same thing, tranny wont shift out of 1st gear and check engine light came on. Good thing it was under warranty.

brandoncrone and kensai,

Thank you for the replies. These are the answers I was hoping for. It just seemed strange that the trans would just go out after driving fine. Hopefully the shop will tell me the same news. Thanks again.

brandoncrone,

I did get the code. Its P 0720 and I called the dealer they said its the low speed sensor. They also told me to change the high speed while its in the shop or I would be back soon.

Sounds right. While your getting it worked on have the fluid and filter changed out if you haven't already.
