'00 Durango SLT 138,000 Switch to Syn Oil?
Hello all,
I just found this forum while trying to find info about using synthetic oil in the durango's so please forgive me if this question is posted in the wrong section or has been answered a million times before. I tried searching for similar threads without hitting on my question so here goes...
I was just given a 2000 SLT 4WLD that has 138646 miles on it. It belonged to a family member who just bought a new vehicle. I know the truck received oil changes every 3500 miles using conventional Valvoline 5W30 and Fram Filter.
I am considering changing over to a high mileage oil but can't figure out which would be best suited for the truck.
The engine is a 4.7
I am looking at either using 5w30 Pennzoil "High Mileage Vehicle" which is still a conventional oil or going with 5W30 Valvoline "MAX LIFE Full Synthetic"
Fram Filters are out too, Looking to use NAPA Gold oil filters.
Do either of these choices sound wise? Is there a better choice? or should I just keep what has worked for 138000 miles?
I'm not even sure if it is a good idea to run full syn in the 4.7
Help???
Thanks for your time and for reading...
John

I just switched to Mobil Super High Mileage Oil(It's a Synthetic Blend) and Mobil 1 filters. My D has 200k miles and runs like new. I really love Mobil products. You can buy the filter and oil at Wal-Mart. It not very expensive...
I personally use mobil 1 extended performance on mine. Have been doin oil changes every 4-5,000 miles on it since i got it with 70,000 now at 101,000. My opinion would be to try to get a syn blend like the valvoline syn blend (blue bottle) or the high mileage max life (red bottle). Have used in the past on other vehicles and all is well. Penzoil high mileage is also good in my opinion but ive only used it once on a vehicle which later showed symptoms of a leaking valve cover and oil pressure switch.
Thanks for the quick responses,
TopDog, I have never used pennzoil before so I don't really know if I like it or not. My wife just purchased a 2012 Hyundai Accent and Pennzoil Platinum was the recommended Full Syn by the dealer. Thats what originally lead me to looking at the Pennzoil brand.
Dolittle, I have always been a Valvoline guy. Nice to see another option for the conventional Valvoline. The link was helpful.
Doms, Cogrates on 200000 Miles! From both TopDog and your replies, I looked up the mobil 1 high mileage. It's a full synthetic so I got my answer about if I can run full syn. I was not really sure if I should switch to full syn in this vehicle. I was worried that using it might actually cause more harm than good. I am leaning this direction and may ask the dealer about using Mobil1 full synthetic in the wifes new ride. As for the Purolator filter... are you using the L14670 Classic or PureONE?
