Default 4X4 Stopped Working

Hey everyone.... Happy New Year!

I have a 2002 4.7 Durango with 4X4... Shift on the fly switch

Got down to -40 here the other day and my 4X4 decided to stop working. I do park in the garage and thought maybe it had something to due with moisture and cold weather. After parking it overnight I tried it in the morning and it's still not working.

I then did some other work which needed to have the negative battery disconnected. When I went driving after this I noticed that the 4x4 worked again. The next day I had the same problem and it was broken once more.

I have done some research and it seems this could be caused by the Transfer Case Control Module or an Actuator/Motor. The Woman has the truck right now so I havn't been able to listen to the case doing it's thing yet. i have checked the fuses and everything appears to be fine.

Here is what I do know....

1. Lights on the switch are working

2. When I select 4hi the switch blinks the orange light and nothing happens. no 4x4.

3. I have cycled through all gears and tried them one at a time with the switch. I then tried both the 4hi and 4lo in neutral. I know for 4lo neutral is required.

So we got a blinking light on the switch, no shift, and only worked after I disconnected the battery. Thoughts?

Also.... might be related....

Select right turn signal.... strange horn type sound comes from front of truck.... fast blinking...wipers come on. wipers turn off after turn signal off.

Select headlights on, wipers come on and stay on. FML! I figure this is a bad ground behind the left headlamp that shares with the wiper system. i will look into this... just thought I'd mention it if it somehow happens to be connected through junctions or something.

If anyone has any info.... help would be appreciated!

actually the lights/wipers/turn signal issue kinda screams CTM to me, multiple electrical problems on systems that have no obvious conneciton (definitely check the ground first, but dont get your hopes up that it will work)

as for the 4wd only working after disconnecting the battery you could try resetting all the control modules (disconnect the battery negative cable and while its off hold the key to start for 30 seconds, reconnect the cable) if its a but stored in the TCCM this will fix it, if not start checking wire connections, especially underneath the truck, if that doesnt do it, i would lean towads the TCCM needing replacement.

Thanks for the reply. I will have a look at the possible ground issue and try resetting the the modules first. Hopefully that will fix the 4x4 issue.

I read on some other posts that guys with the wiper/turn signal/ lights issues had found that they all ground to the same location and that after checking there (somewhere behind left headlamp) and cleaning it up.... started working again

Funny how all this happened on the same day... out of no where.

if it is a groung issue, that would make me wonder if the TCM shares the same ground if all the issues showed up at the same exact time.
