4x4 Help
I just pickedup a 2000 Durango SLT 4x4, 4.7L, 4x4 Shifter on the Floor with 4Lo, 4Hi, N, 2Hi. This is my first 4x4 and I am new to the forum. I checked out the DIY section and downloaded the service manual for the truck, but it is missing the Section 21 for the Front axle/transfer case information. I really do not understand how the system should work.
The previous owner ran the rear diff out of oil and ruined it. I replaced it from the junkyard. I got a build sheet from Dodge to make sure I get the same rearend. We do not think the the front wheels are engaging when put in to 4x4. We went to a dirt road and stepped on the gas and never had a spin from the front tires. We jacked up the back end and put into gear. The rear wheels turned and the drive shaft from the transfer case to the front axle turns but the truck did not try to budge. I checked the fuses in the cab and under the hood, I did not see anything labled for the 4x4. Where or what should I check to find out what the problem is. Is there something I am missing?

explaining how it would work would take alot of text so ill do the short version here.
the t-case takes in put power from the engine and sends it to either the rear wheels or the front AND rear wheels. when it leaves the t-case it goes through the driveshaft into the differential (which is a set of gears) and is then sent out to the wheels.
what YOU need to do is to open the front differential and have a look at what is inside and my guess is you will find a damaged ring gear or input gear.

Take it out to a parking lot or somewhere you can turn the truck. Try 4hi in tight turn, you should feel the front grabbing. Try low and the tires should "bark" and steering will be stiff. Is there a light on the dash? Should be "part time 4wd". There is a $25 pressure switch on the side of the T-case that shuts down 4lo when theres too much torque. Found that out pulling a Chevy Diesel out of the sand. Find a good axle shop and have them inspect all the running gear, sounds like the previous owner did not maintain it. I use http://www.adamsdriveshaft.com/ . They can help if you can't find answers.
