Default Idling/RPM problem(s)...

Hey guys I drive a 1999 Dodge Durango with a 5.9 Magnum. Recently I've had a problem with it idling a bit rough on a cold start, for maybe the first 3-5 minutes of it running, then that smooths out. However a problem I keep having as well is that at-least once a day, usually when I'm going up hill, but not always, the RPM's will drop below 500 RPM's, my headlights will dim if they are on, and the Durango will stall. All I have to do to make it run is just pull over and put it in park, and then turn the key and it will start and run like normal. Any idea's what is causing these problems???

For the rough Idle, I would clean your IAC, and maybe do a tune-up if you haven't in a while.

+1. After that check your trans fluid to make sure its at the right level also clean the throttle body and see if it continues to act this way.

I recently replaced the plugs and wires within the last 6 months as part of a tune up, as well as a recent oil/filter change so that should be ok.

Now for the possibly dumb question(s) but what does IAC stand for? And why would my tranny fluid level cause/affect any of this? I'm asking because I want to understand all of this before I fix it.

idle air control. and i assume he said to check the trans fluid as a reason for the stalling or at least thats the way i understood it because it should have no effect on the idle

Not sure on the trans, guessing it is for the stall. The IAC is the Idle Air Control Valve, and is found on the backside of your throttle body. Also, pull Plug #8 and see if it has anything on it. Can give an indication of anything being pulled where it shouldn't be (Oil, etc) that might cause a little rough idle.

Yes the trans fluid is for the stalling not the idle. I had a leak and since my fluid was low it caused my car to stall out in reverse, added fluid and got it on point and it made the stall go away. Not saying it is the problem but it is a possibility.
