Default 99 dodge durango tranny problems

ok to start off with i have a 99 dodge durango 5.2l mpi v-8 dont know thw transmossion i frist knoticed it not shifting out of 1st so i pulled over and checked the fluid it was low so i added some atf+4 fluid and it didnt change it so i got in and tried to shift manuly to 1st and then 2nd but it wouldnt go past drive any idea for me to try

Your transmission is a 42-44RE. Most likely a 44RE.

Did you check it with the engine running and hot, also the transmission has to be in neutral and the gears all gone through for at least 2 seconds a piece. Also ensure you are on flat ground!

Get it topped off and see how she acts?

ok i toped it of still there and the shifter wont move past drive yes my drive way is flat and it was hot and running

its my parents suv and i talked to him and told my dad what it was doing and he said it takes spells where it wont shift and i would haft to drive it a wile befor it wil start shifting agin so
i just drove it about 1/4 mile to get some gas and it started shifting , it shifts fine now but the gear shift still wont go into 2,or1 drive any idea what will make it stop shifting when it sits for a few days ?

I would check your shift cable, but if that isn't the issue then it would have to be internal and mechanical.

ok thx ill take a look at it then and the problem with it not shifting was the output speed censor
