Default Trailer lighting issues...

I have a 98 Durango with the 5.9L I CANNOT get the lighting to work. It just stopped working last summer, I changed the connector on the truck, and still nothing so I hauled using a diff truck till now. I need this one again. I have checked all fuses and replaced the connector twice now. I have a trailer brake on here that I am pretty sure was put on at factory. I have the thing wired up right.

The biggest issue and I don't know what exactly to look for via internet is that my parking light fuse blows while a trailer is hooked up. Takes a few minutes, but goes. Then all of a sudden the trailer lights all work except for obviously the taillights. But only while I leave the blown fuse in there. Once I replace it, process starts all over. Help?!

There is a short somewhere, tracing a electrical issue can be a PITA... i would start at the plug in the back and trace the wires all the way to the front and look for anything that might be odd...

I have already done this. All practically brand new looking. I'm gonna try messing with it some more tomorrow. Maybe redo the ends on the wires.

There is a short. Check the trailer wiring first, then move to the truck. Use a multi-meter and check for a grounding circuit in the wiring loom to ground on the trailer.

Have tried several different trailers. And trailers work fine with the other truck. It has nothing to do with the trailers. The problem lies within the D. How about this....if this is factory wiring, would there be a relay and amp for it specifically under the hood-fuse-box? The trailer brake stuff I mean. Seeing as I continue to blow the PL fuse. Any info you need, just ask and I'll get it. Thanks! I've run down all the wiring and I have not found any shorts. All wires are intact and in connected properly. I try replacing the connector one more time. Its the one from Autozone.

Just called the dealer and ordered a stock connector. Hopefully this solves the problem. Damn cheap China crap from autozone may be my problem. Lol.

Update. Okay, another fuse I noticed had blown was the 20amp on the trailer brake wiring, which goes from the under hood fuse box straight on back to the connected. In the back, one cord is blue, the other red. The other trailer wires are brown-taillights, white-ground, green-right turn, yellow-left turn. Those are labeled on both the connector and wiring. The red and blue are not. And the only 2 holes left on the connector are EB/XL and XL/EB. Which goes where? I'm picking up the connector tonight and I am tempted to pick up the wiring too. Would it be hard to rerun it all? Another issue I see is that in the fuse box under the hood there is 1 trailer amp spot for a fuseable link and 1 for a relay. But when I try and fill these slots, they don't have anything to connect to in there. Basically just bare holes. This is a problem?

I'll throw some pics up tonight. Dealer says there was only a Chrysler packages that they did for trailer brakes. But its possible they had it put on. I found a black box that the taillights, turn signals, and ground runs through about a foot away from the trailer connector tucked up behind the bumper. What is that? This may be the culprit consider the parking light fuse is the problem. Is this a relay or switch type deal? Part of the wiring?

Generally, the Blue wire is for your electric brakes (sends juice to them when you hit the brake petal) and the Red is a constant 12v power.

If you have bare holes in the PDC where the trailer fuse and relay are to be then you DO NOT have the factory tow package. The wiring you have was installed aftermarket unless someone pulled the factory wiring along the way with is really retarded...

With that said, my best advise would be to a) pick up a factory wire harness at the dealer or b) pick up the aftermarket harness that ties into the tail lights and a roll of red, blue wire and run yourself some new lines. option b would be much cheaper...

That is part of the aftermarket trailer harness i talked about above it plugs into each of the tail lights to give you the trailer lights.... yes that could be the culprit... somebody added the trailer wiring along the line
