2000 Durango Engine info needed
I have a 2000 Durango with a blown 5.9 engine, And wondering what other engines (Vehicle Models ets) will fit in this easily without changing wiring or anything? I am not familiar w the durango, the price was right and its in great shape, just needs an engine.
Any info would be great, Other model engines that will fit or junkyards near seattle, I am in Alaska, so still would need to ship it here. Locally not many durango engines I dont think. Thanks

You could just replace it with another 5.9... Unless you want to do a whole lot of unecessary work. The 5.9 is the best motor anyway so no need to replace it with the 5.2 or 4.7 which by the way use different transmissions then the 5.9...
98-99 was only the 5.9 and 5.2, 98 was 4x4 only and 99 was either 4x4 or 2wd for both engines. 2000 here is the the breakdown with their respective transmissions:
5.9l AWD 4X4 2WD 46re trans
5.2l 2WD 44re trans
4.7l AWD 4X4 2WD 45rfe trans
2001+ is the same list except the 5.2l is was not used.
Now to the OP's question. A 5.2l will drop in and vise versa. But they had different transmissions. The 44re for the 5.2 and the 46re for the 5.9. Putting a 5.2 in place of a 5.9 isn't an issue as long as you put in a pcm for a 5.2. Now replacing a 5.2 with 5.9l I would advise changing out the tranny because the 44re wasn't meant for the towing capability the 5.9 offers. A 4.7L will not work period. At least not with out some huge changes cause it is a completely different engine series and transmission series.
5.9l AWD 4X4 2WD 46re trans
5.2l 2WD 44re trans
4.7l AWD 4X4 2WD 45rfe trans

your breakdown for the 2000 model year is close but not quite right
5.9 was avialable with both drivelines (4x4 and 2wd)
5.2 was available in 2wd only
4.7 was available in 4wd only

Nope, well kinda incorrect!
In 1998 it was only available in 4X4 models only, and it came in both the 5.9L and 5.2L.
In 1999, 2WD and 4X4 came in both 5.9L and 5.2L motors.
5.9L came with a 46RE, and 5.2L came with a 44RE trans.
And lets not forget the all exclusive 3.9L motor which was available in the 1999 2WD models only backed with a 42RE trans.
Later in 2000 the 5.2L was replaced with the 4.7L engine backed with the 45RFE trans.
The 3.9L engine were both introduced in 1999 and discontinued in 1999, yes it was only available for 1 year.
Also there were still some 5.2L motors available in 2000, but I think they were only 2wd and the quit making them in mid 2000 year.
After mid 2000, the 5.9L and 4.7L were all you could get.

Ya it was in mine as well.
When they printed the manual it was meant to include it, however the engine was late getting in the line for late 1998 build for the 1999 year sales, and also was never going to go in the 4X4 version anyway which was available at the time in 1998.
So instead they left the manual the same in basics.
Back then the V6 was a runner up motor in most every major motor company, and even standard for many years, the V8 motors were upgrades. However the people that bought them didn't like the low power and crappy real time MPG's because of an under rated motor. If you follow the reviews and actual sales data they simply flunked out and they walked away from it. And then a larger movement was going for more power and best in class, and that is what the people wanted, and still do!
