After looking at my Dodge '02 4 WD front propeller shaft (aka Drive Shaft) I realize the shaft has a universal joint and a CV joint. The universal joint looks okay. I am unable to inspect the CV joint for area of noise without removing. Does anyone have the instructions on properly removing this propeller shaft with a CV? The repair manual I have is for the 2000 Durango which has two (2) universal joints; no CVJ. Thanks, Lee
Well, after reviewing my options, I've discovered NAPA has the complete propeller shaft assembly with joints to install fro about $252.00 plus core. I will take this route as other parts stores have only the U joint. The original shaft assembly has a lot of surface rust due to driving on the beach.
Question: what is the largest challenge when repalcing this propeller shaft which has on one end a Universal Joint and the other end a CVJ?
I am a mechanic by trade and always enjoy a challenge, but have learned it is sometimes better to leave certain chores performed by more reliable source.
My next challenge is to replace my 2000 durango engine with a rebuilt; stay tuned.

Well with replacing the entire drive line it will come with new joints Mean.
You could also have yours rebuilt at a local drive line facility if it is cheaper. All that driving in sand can do a number on bearings in a heart beat, so keep the undercarriage clean.

Discovered the CVJ of the propeller shaft was defective and in need of replacement. I found the assembly available complete with the CVJ and Uni from NAPA. This propeller shaft must be a regular problem because NAPA has 12 of these assemblies on the shelf. FYI, the Uni end looked fine therefore the CVJ is the only reason for replacement. ALso, my 2000 Durango has two (2) Uni and has no issues to date.
