I like my 1998 for the 231HD, well supported 4x4 upgrades like 241 planatery and slip yoke eliminators. Not AWD. 318 strong and gets lil better gas milage than 360. 9.25 with tow package and 3.92 gears. Any year will do. Mine also has one year only Chestnut Pearl.
+1 here.
I have the 5.9 with 3.92 and an lsd in my 9.25 rear diff. Just a little off road. Seems like with a little love and possible custom parts would be a beast off road! I busted my CV though, (think something caught the boot). If this is more crazy off road I would SAS for sure, sway bar diss, and either lsd for the rear or air lockers.

Sorry I have a 98. I would say 98 or 99 just cause you can get them cheap and rip into them without having to worry.
Also make sure to get a shift kit...I would to just be on the safe side.

What part of the D are you asking about?
I would say they are way tougher just cause D's were built to do alot more the Grand's were. Now don't get me wrong, you can throw money at anything and make it a great off road vehical but you will have a more solid base with a D compared to a Grand.

If I had a couple of grand to throw at my D right now. I would go to a JY and pull the front and rear axles off of a dodge 2500. Rebuild the diffs in both and install airlockers in the rear and warn's in the fron. Run coils front and rear with a 4 link system. Build a custom fron and rear bumper for max angle(watch for the radiator. It hangs really low in the front). A shift kit, and a few things to the engine and walla! Beast! But I have a wedding to pay for and $5K on my D isn't happening...yet...

Sorry. Talking about transmission.

I had a YJ. Sold it. It was done up as well. Needed more room for the kids.

IFS tends to be weaker than a solid front axle, its just the way it works unfortunately.

the durango got the IFS for better ride and handling on the street, the jgc was build more with off-road in mind, its also a good bit smaller.

also the jgc with a 5.2 got the same trans and a durango w/ the 5.2 and so forth with the 5.9 and 4.7

So, the gain over a gc is the axle is better and the gear ratio. But, you loose up front with the IFS?

There is no "standard" on the rear. Other then that the 1998-1999 had a 194 FIA front axle under it and the 2000-2003 had a C205F under the front.

Basically a DANA 35.

As for the rears, they are either a Chrysler Corporate 8.25 or 9.25, and both came in open or LSD.

Gearing available was 3.55 or 3.92.
