Default 45RFE weird shifting from 2nd to 3rd

166K on the old girl. Tranny fluids and filters changed fairly regularly. I thought I have been noticing little slips here and there lately but now I am beginning to get weird slippage between 2nd and 3rd when going easy on the gas. It almost feels like it is chattering. If I'm on it a bit she seems to shift better.
Fluid is still nice and pink / at the right level.
Only code showing is for a power steering pressure switch.

2001 4.7 - 4WD

This sounds like clutch packs to me but would be interested in other ideas. It certainly would be easier to replace a sensor!

Master tech - i do not know what the readings are. Is that something i need a tool to measure with?

Addendum - feeling like a bit of a moron- if I put my dipstick in one way it seats and stays put - if I flip it over and slide it in it pushes back out about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

I am actually reading a bit high on the HOT reading when she is hot and in N.
