5.9 engine surge
I suffered an engine surge for months in my 5.9 2001 Durango. It started happening only at hwy speeds on longer drives, but steadily got worse. Finally it was doing it just around town and even idling at a light. There was no codes, so the shops had no clue what to do. Some wanted to replace the computer or the throttle body as a guess! Yeah, guess again... Acting on a tip from another forum, I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). It was about $40 and took 3 minutes to replace. It has been 3 weeks and the sure is history! I know this problem is not uncommon, so I wanted to post my success story in hopes it is helpful to others.
Glad to hear your success story! Also, monitor your speed sensors that is mounted on your tranny and rear axle. My tranny started to slip between gear changes when under full throttle and nearly lost my engine after hitting the redline when this happens. Thank god that Dodge installed a rev limiter to prevent the engine from revving any higher! no codes or errors whatsoever. But being a member fo this forum for so long and seeing how replacing the speed sensor and output sensors that is on the tranny and the rear axle solves alot of tranny issues. Tranny slippage is GONE! So if you replace one, go ahead and replace both just to be safe. I had these sensors changed out when my slippage occurred on my D with 60k miles.
I am not sure but I would guess the sensor on your transmission would be the the Output sensor and the one at the rear axle is the speed sensor. Anyways, for those folks that as a 2000 model, you can only get these sensors from the dealer. Don't know why the 2000 models are so special. All the 3rd party part shops have these sensors for 98's, 99's, 01's, etc, but not the 2000 model. Strange. Here are the dealer prices for the sensor.
Transmission output sensor: Approx: $25
Speed sensor at rear axle: $50
Price is parts only. Labor extra.
However I still have the bog down hestitation at low rpm's between 1500-2500 and you don't feel power come online until it hits 3000 rpm's. Engine already tuned up with new plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, injectors cleaned, new TPS, Speed, and output sensors and just recently cleaned my Throttle body with some B12 carb cleaner. The throttle body was a little dirty and I noticed the D ran much smoother after cleaning it with the B12 but the hestation is still there. Maybe this is norm for a 00 D, R/T?

It is a 5.9L. Big block motors have low rev. with your main horse power at higher RPM. All the big blocks I've owned had that problem with mid range power loss. Mine is running one h#ll of a lot beter now though.
Damn. [:@] I got ripped off at the dealer. I had them do a speed output sensor in my 2000 and the total cost came to nearly $180.00.That seems like a lot of labor time to put in a sensor.
You sure did! A friend that is a mechanic of mine helped me change both of mine out. I cannot remember which one was the easy one and the other was a little difficult. I would have to say the easy one was the one on the tranny. Total time to change out both sensors; less than 30 minutes. if you put the durango on a jack.

YOU got ripped off, the rear left lock plunger fell inside the dorr, probably from children constantly screwing around with door/window switches... So I figured its the linkage, right? So I bring it to the dealer, and when I go back they said, oh the motor was blown, which to me makes no sense to me, ok. . Whatever, it was $85.
Then I look and I get charged 2.75 hrs labour. You know it takes 5 mins to remove a door skin and maybe 20 to put it back on. Swap out a motor, or solenoid, maybe 15 mins?
So I tell theguy that and he says "It doesnt matter if it takes 15 mins or 2.75 hours, you get charged the manual rate"... tough )(*&^ you know. Too bad. That is the last time I ever brought the vehicle there.
