In the book it says to torgue the pinion nut to 210ft/lbs. I torqued it to 100ft/lbs and took it for a drive and the housing where the new bearing is was hot to the touch. So I backed it out to 70ft/lbs and took another drive that was better but the bearing was still warm.
My question is 210ft/lbs to much or is that what it needs to be? And if that is what it need to be why did the bearing get hot? I made sure everything was installed right.

 

Just a question, Did you replace the pinion bearings?

 

I replaced the front bearing. I used the old crush sleeve. I backed off the nut to 20ft.lbs and ran it. It still gets warm.

 

Anytime you replace a bearing, the crush sleeve needs to be replaced too and then set up the pinion shaft preload. When you replace the bearing, did you replace the cup too?

 

Not sure what the cup is if it the race then yes i did replace it. I didn't know I needed to replace the crush sleeve. Is there a way to fix this with out pulling the rear end apart and pelacing the crush sleeve?

 

Sorry, But you'll going to need to start over. The ring gear and carrier will need to come out and and the pinion gear too and set up the perload. Do you know the specs for the turning torque on the pinion shaft?

 

No I don't know the specs. Someone replaced that bear once before. The more I think about it the more I wonder if they left that sleeve on also. I climbed under there looking around and that spot was hot. The old bearing was chewed up but it wasn't ready to let loose.
