this is a nice thread. ive used royal purple filters on my last two changes. i believe champion labs makes the filter. i will be cutting mine open as well and posting pics. and i havent used fram in at least two years. ive used bosch, mobil 1, and now rp.

My dad had (not sure if its still around or not) some crazy adapter that replaced the oil filter that you would put a toll of toilet paper in it and it would run the oil through that as a filter! HA! No idea how well it worked or if he ever had it on a car.

Which brand on tp do you use Charmin or the cheap stuff thats like sand paper. lol

I'll take pics of my amsoil filter at my next change and post. I had one apart and it seemed nicely built, but at $15 a pop it better be.

I would definitely stick with the quilted, if not you just have a fram. lol

after old schools post that gives fram a 50% score on acceptable filters, not a chance that im willing to take, especially not for the price of them, ill buy the walmart house brand for $2.xx over a fram

Look at what you started shrpshtr, now you got everyone on here, including myself, cutting open their oil filters. lol Me, I'm just waiting to finish my oil cycle.

if you want to go ahead and take that chance on your engine be my guest, however based on what i am seeing from your pictures all the damage to the purolator appears to be from a sloppy job opening the filter up, the ADBV looks to be in better shape and the spring also appears to be of better construction on the bypass valve. That said, i believe that opening the filter can with an angle grinder was a very BAD idea, and doesnt give us a fair comparison of how the filter held up since it is a very violent way to open it up, and therefor makes it difficult to make a fair comparison, in an ideal world you would use an oil filter cutter to open them up, which is basically a lathe with a very fine cutting bit. I will also point out that the fram filter has cardboard on the top and bottom which does NOT SEAL and allows unfiltered oil to leach through into the system, sure its better than nothing, but the metal end caps in the purolator filter will force the oil to go through the actual filter medium.

my take is still that the purolator is a better filter.
