Angry Rango Downshift Hits Over-Rev Limiter - Why?

2002 Rango - 5.9l - From standstill - no problem. But when traveling down the road at any speed and pass someone the following issue arises:

Press the accelerator, it downshifts, climbs in RPMs and at the point I think it should change gears, the over rev limiter kicks in and the truck "huck-a-bucks" like mad until I back off (and then it changes gears).

WTF? I have NEVER had an automatic tranny do this.

Any thoughts?

have you checked the TV cable to see if it is out of adjustment, that is what controls shifting into/out of the passing gear (its also known as a kickdown cable).

if that doesnt fix it i will have to ask when your last band adjustment was?? if not id say its time.

I will check that. I know what you are talking about. It's got 162k on it and I just bought it a month ago so I have no idea when the bands were adjusted.
