Default diy oil changes

I was wondering who here changes there own oil. I have a 2001 4.7 and never had anything this big/heavy. Can i put it on plastic ramps? Does all/most of the oil from the filter comes out the hole where the cover is thanks

i dont use ramps, i change my oil on the ground(just slide under on my back) but i see no reason as to why you couldnt use the ramps.

and no the oil from the filter does NOT come out the access hole, make sure to put a couple of rags up there to catch the inevitable oil spill, i fyou are up on ramps and not level i would expect even more of a mess.

Depends how sturdy your ramps are. Most car ramps from parts stores nowadays are plastic and can usually hold up to 8 or 9000 pounds. As far as draining the oil just crawl underneath and drain the majority of the old oil Out of the oil pan and then remove the filter. You might spill some from there but most of it stays in the filter

I usually drain mine on ramps so that the oil can run to the back of the pan more easily. My ramps are plastic also, but they're rated for 12,000 lbs iirc. No matter how you do it the oil filter is gonna be messy.

the 4.7 oil filter yes, the 3.9/5.2/5.9 that was on my old truck and my dads old truck was nice and easy bc it hang nice and perpendicular to the ground, reach in the wheel well and unscrew it and pull it out carefull not spill any (like a full glass of water), very little mess from those filters

not really, mine sticks out at about a 30 degree angle (maybe even a little more) from the side of the block on my 5.2

Same here. But with my body lift it makes it much easier to grab and remove. Hardly spill any now

my d didnt have the front skid plate so everything is easy access as far as the filter goes. It does drain right on the front cross member but its not much i just wipe it down with a rag and what residue that is still on there just makes sure that part wont rust after going thru these wonderful michigan winters.

thats weird to me, however we both had the 3.9(all 3 are supposed to be basically the same) in the old trucks, they hang perfectly perpendicular so made for a nice clean change through the wheel well

I can assure you that my 5.2s oil filter isn't perpendicular to the ground.

As for the skid-plates they don't really get in the way much for draining the pan. I've never taken my skid-plates off to change the oil.
