Default Two Cranks to start?

thanks in advance for the help. We have a 1999 Durango 5.9l that is taking longer then it should to start. It will not start the first time that you crank it over. But it will start the second second time you crank it over.

This is everytime you start the car and it will eventually put double the wear on the starter, battery, etc..

Anyone have any idea where to check? It otherwise runs perfect.

check fuel pressure on a cold rail and watch the gauge while cranking, it sounds to me like a faulty anti-drainback valve in the fuel pump, you could try cycling the key on and off instead of cranking and see what happens, if that takes care of it you have a diagnosis

Is the anti drain back valve a separate part that can be replaced our do you have to replace the entire fuel pump assembly?

entire fuel pump. mine's been bad for the past 2 years. just turn the key to on for 1 second then back to off, then to on and start it. I've been doing that for the past 2 years

its part of the pump so if that fixes it just keep doing it , unless you want to cut the fuel line and add your own valve, but i wouldnt recommend that personally more effort than its worth

I agree, that's why I've just been doing my "key dance" every time I start my truck

Just did the "key dance" It primed the system and started right away when I actually turned over the engine.

as long as you don't mind doing that you can just leave the fuel pump alone for now then.
