Ticking noise from A/C compressor
I have a 4.7 4WD, and over the last few days on the first startup every morning there has been a very loud ticking noise coming from the A/C compressor. The ticking is present with the A/C on or off, and it disappears after driving for a few minutes. It does not tick unless the D has been parked over night and once it goes away it does not return through the rest of the day. I think it may be a bearing within the compressor but I cannot tell for sure.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as to what may be causing this???
Any suggestions would be appreciated...

This is just a thought -
Are you sure it is coming from the AC compressor? I'm not sure about the 4.7L, but on the 5.2L there is an idler pulley right under the AC unit. It is spring-loaded and can sometimes "tick" as the engine lightly surges.
If it is an idler, it is easier to fix...

You may want to check your water pump too. It's also in that same area and I just had an issue with mine. 5.9L engine though. It could be the first signs thatthe bearing is going bad.
Thanks for the input, I double checked where the noise is coming from and it is definitely coming from the A/C compressor or the A/C pulley, I am 400 miles over the warranty and the dealer is refusing to look at it because it was not documented before the warranty expired so I guess I will start looking into what it will cost to diagnose and repair before it turns into more of a problem.

You mentioned it ticks with the A/C on or off and it may be the Compressor? You may have to do a visual look to confirm. Run the A/C on and watch for the Clutch to engage the compressor. If the compressor ticks, then it is coming from compressor. Turn off your A/C and watch to make sure the clutch disenage. if it dis-engage, you will not see the compress turning. If it ticks, it may not be the compressor. I would check the idler pulley and check the fluid level on the power steering pump just to the lower right of the compressor.
You also mentioned it would tick if the D is left alone over night? May sound like a low fluid warning somewhere. Have you checked the engine oil? Maybe valve ticking when you first start up due to lack of oil lubrication?

power steering, oil levels are fine. I think it may be lifter noise, I 'm going to buy a Mopar filter and change oil to synthetic anyway, I've only had the truck a month, hope this isn't a bad omen. Anyone ever changed out the AC pulley bearings?
