Default Overdrive shifting problems

Hello,

My Daughter has a 2000 Durango 5.2L V8, 2WD unknown Trans. and the transmission will not shift into overdrive. The RPMS run 3000+ and it will not down shift when climbing hills at low speed. Also, while driving pushing the O/D button the light comes on, on the insturment panel but nothing happens. Her gas mileage is horrible, around 10 MPG where it should be close to 20 MPG. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

She would have a 44RE trans.. Im accually running into the same issues and you only my truck does downshift going up hills...

As i have found out there are many things that can go bad to cause this to happen.

Let's Start with the basics... is she getting a Check Engine light? if so are there any codes?

When we bought the Durango 2 months ago it had Codes: 0123, 1282, 0138, 0455, 1687, and check engine. Most codes were for low voltage. I cleaned and tightened the battery terminals and they all went away except 0455 which I believe was the the rubber lines running from the fuel door were bad, cracked or leaking, which looked good. Also, maybe 0138.

P0455 Evap Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected

P0138 1/2 O2S Shorted To Voltage

I would start by getting those to codes fixed.... not that they would have anything to do with it..

Ill also ask these questions...

How old is you battery? if it more that 4 years old i would just replace it and see if that does the trick.. a weak and dieing battery can reach havoc on these rigs.

When was the trans last service with new fluid or filter? If it has not been done recently or is unknown i would go ahead and change the fluid (ATF+4 ONLY), filter and have the bands adjusted also.

I would also since there cheap and you gonna be there anyways replace the output speed sensor on the back of the trans.. that has a few things to do with shifting and may solve your issue..

I would start with that and see if they solve it... if not come back and i can lead you to more options... like i said i am chasing this gremlin myself...
