Default truck wouldnt turn just clicked, now works great.

on saturday i was hauling my trailer up to my parents to get a load of wood. when we got to there house i turned it off went inside to talk, went back out side to head down on our property to get a load of wood, and my d wouldnt start. it wouldnt even turn over. it just clicked. then a relay behind my glove box clicked about 10 times befor it stopped. so i popped my hood and looked for melted cables checked my starter, it was all fine. all my fuses were good and my realys were good also. so i jumped back into my d and tried to start it again. it just clicked, and that relay started going off again, also i saw my negitive battery terminal smoking? so i removed the battery terminals, and waited about 15 minuts, tried to start it and it clicked but this time it turned a little, so i turned it off and tried to start it again and it started right up.
ever since then, it has started fine every time.
i have no idea what would have caused that.
does anyone know what could have happened? what went wrong?

Bad connection at ground? Are the terminals corroded and was it tight?

all the grounds were good i didnt touch em. and when i disconected my battery i had to pry it off cuz it was on so tight. so i had a good connection there as well.
i was just stumped. cuz i had just stopped at the gas station about 1 mile away from my parents to get gas. and obviously i shut it off there. and when i left i had no problem starting it, and i only drove a mile to there house. i checked the engine temp and it was at 180.

seems to me like there was dirt gunking up the connection, removing it and putting it back on cleaned it up some and now its fine the smoking was probably arcing from a weak connection

alrighty sounds like a good prognosis to me. anyways its starting fine now. i just thought it was very weird that it happened, especially since it has never happened befor, and it hasnt happened since. it was like my engine was locked up.
weird huh?
