Excessive cranking
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and have a question about my 00 Durango w/5.9. I recently bought this car with 60k mi and it runs and drives great. The only problem I'm having is on start up after it's been sitting. It takes excessive amount of cranking to start. Suspecting a fuel problem I've checked the pressure. It goes up to almost 50psi when the pump runs but then bleeds down to zero in a few minutes. Does anyone know of any common problems with this fuel system?
Thanks

sounds to me like you have a bad check valve in the fuel line (the valve which is supposed to stop the fuel pressure from bleeding back down), you should be able to turn the key on and wait for a few seconds while the fuel lines prime, and then start the truck, if that does away with the problem then you have a confirmation.
the check valve is part of the fuel pump so is NOT easy or affordable to change if you dont have to.

Sharp is correct, probably the check valve. Try this to confirm. Turn the key to on then off then on then try to start. The fuel pump only runs about 3 seconds when the key is first turned on. If it starts fine after you cycle the key then I'm sure it is the check valve. I have seen in line check valves but I'd replace the fuel pump. The only fuel pumps I would buy are Delphi or OEM from Dodge.
Thanks for the suggestions. It does start better when I cycle the key on and off a few times to build up fuel pressure. I was hoping it would be something easier but I guess i will be taking the tank down to replace the pump. Thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes.
