Question Shifting Problems 02 Durango 5.9L w/46RE

After starting, the first shift from 1st to overdrive is perfect. After stopping (as if at a stop sign) it will not shift out of 1st. Sometimes you can get it to shift into 2nd by moving the gear shift selector from drive to 2nd. If this happens it will then shift into 3rd and on to overdrive. If it does not shift into 2nd then I have to stop, turn the key off and re-start the engine, now it will shift once thru the gears and as soon as you stop the problem starts all over again.

Try replacing the output speed sensor on the tail of the trans. as i have found that has alot to do with shifting.

do you have the right fluid in it. I was told wrong fluid won't let it shift right. I was having sorta the same problem I changed the 3-4 shift solenoid, the governor solenoid and the transducer. After changing all of these I took it to the target. found out that the wire connector located under the shift linkage (on the transmission) wasn't together right. look to see if your connection is together right. make sure there is no debris in it. hope this helps you out
