Default P0442 EVAP emission control system leak

I had advanced auto parts run their computer on my durango and these is the code it shot out.
They told me it was a common problem with the gas cap and I replaced it about a week ago.
Now the check engine light is back on with the same code. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and my now where I can start looking for it.

I am new to these forums, so bare with me.

Just wanted to let you know:

I just started to receive the MIL 2 weeks ago and this code was associated with it.
From what Im seeing we have a chance at solving this with simply replacing the gas cap....dont know for sure...but it looks like that will be my first attempt.

Possible cause: "Loose gas cap, Seals to and from fuel tank"

Do we have any veterans on this matter?

same problem here....i replaced the gas cap about 10 days ago and even drove 1000 miles last weekend and today the same code popped up again[:@] the guy from autozone was friendly enough to reset it for me but i just don't see how it can still be a gas cap problem after having put a new one on already[&o] any ideas anyone[]

check the clamps on the hoses feeding the gas tank. a loose one or a crack in one can cause the same code.

I recently had the same code, replaced the gas cap, and the code went away/showed back up and then persisted. Finally, I took it in for some work, and there was definitely a cracked hose at the Purge Solenoid (the leak was detected by a smoke test).

For me, this started out as a small leak and then progressed to a large leak (as indicated by the codes).

I also had the same error code appear on my durango. A bunch of places told me it was the gas cap (even though replacing the gas cap did absolutely nothing). Eventually I found a split hose (top hose/largest hose) connected to the EVAP canister. I fixed it by cutting the end off of the split hose and then reconnecting it to the EVAP canister.

The EVAP canister can be found directly infront of the gas tank. The attached image is a picture of the EVAP canister. Check all three hoses for split ends (mine was split at the top portion of the largest hose)

I've had this problem many times on my 02 Durango (bought new). In my opinion, the rubber hose they used for the emmision system isdefective or simply not correctly suited to this application. I have seen many posts for this and the dealer even admits that this is a common problem. He said it is just because the hose is subjected to the fuel fumes. I told him that was nonsense. I have an 01 Grand Am that has NEVER once had this issue and an all original 18000 mile 81 Camaro with original hoses and they're fine. These hoses are defective. There should be a recall on them for this.
As other posts have suggested, check ALL your rubber hoses coming from the gas tank to the engine and the ones in the engine compartment especially at the service port. Thefitting with the green cap on the driver's side. I have a 5.9ltr . The last time this happened to me, I had to replace the entire 2 hose harness from the gas tank to the engine.
If enough people call 1-800-chrysler to complain, maybe we can get a recall. I'm calling tomorrow.

The fuel cap is just a good place to start. If it was even a little loose, or if the seal is dryrotting, it cancause a code.

When I pull evap codes on any car, the first thing I ask is if the cap was left off. About a third of the time, the answer is yes. If no, I carfully check the seal. If the seal is bad, new cap. If it's OK, I put a little silicon lube on it and clear the code, tell them to come back in if the light turns on again and then we'll get into diagnostics.

I seem to be the only 1999 5.9 Durango with this extra evap hose banded to the green test port hose underhood. This hose is around 5/8 id and it has a weird cap on the end of it allowing it to vent some. The weird vent cap was burnt or rotted allowing me to blow right through the fuel tank and out the test port hose with no restriction setting our evep codes. I have not heard of this hose from any Dodge forum, or service manual. This is the routing since new, I have never had anything done to it by anybody else but myself. I am a 62 year old Auto Tech and can't seem to find this routing situation anywhere else. I just totally plugged the end of this mystery vent hose, and so far my MIL light remains off. So far..???
If you have one like it, or want a picture I'll try to get ya one.
Thanks.
