Default overdrive

My Durango has overdrive. I noticed that when you are driving you cannot push the overdrive button on the end of the gear shift lever and have the light come on. if its sitting in park it will come on. If you have the light on and push the button you can feel the transmission shift (or at least it feels that way). I always thought it didnt matter if you were driving or not, when you pushed the button it worked. Am I right or not?

Yes you should. It shouldn't matter whether your in park or not.
