Default New Owner, need advice

Guten Tag,

I am new to the forum and to Dodges in general. I need some advice on a Durango I just purchased. It's a 1998 4x4 with a 5.9L with 122k+ miles. I am unsure of the maintenance history on it since the PO's did not keep records. What weight of oil should I run with, keep in mind I am stationed in southwestern Germany and it is butt-wrenching cold right now. I plan on running WIX filters wherever possible and Mopar stuff any other time. What transmission fluid should I use, as far as selection goes, I'm limited on what's available on base, so if it's D/M then I am good. What weight gear lube should I run in the F/R differentials? Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

First off.. what is "butt-wrenching cold" ..lol If we are talking 0F and above you can use 10w30 just fine, now if its below 0F then i would run straight 30 weight. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 10w30.. IMHO, i would not waste your money on the WIX filters..

Only use ATF+4 Transmission Fluid PERIOD. i use valvoline full synthetic ATF+4

I always used 75w-90 gear oil in mine.. just make sure if you have a limited slip in the rear that you add the proper friction modifier to the gear oil.

Cool

Butt-wrenching cold means that when it's so cold outside when you have to go to the bathroom it's so cold you have to stick your thumb up your butt and holler "snake!". What is meant by friction modifier, not familiar with that one. I'm thinking of going with Pennzoil, I'll have to see if the BX here has ATF+4, if not, then it's a trip to a German auto parts store. And what's the better filter to use? I've always had good luck with WIX, but like I said my choices are limited over here so I may have to order on-line.

If they dont have atf+4 amazon sells valvoline synthetic atf+4 12 quarts for around 65 bucks... you will need 8-9 quarts if you plan to do a full drain and fill.

here's a good thread on oil filters --> https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...-revealed.html

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEVER put single weight oil into an engine that calls for a multi-weight oil, 0F is the cutoff btwn 10w30 and 5w30

5w 30 is thinner than 10w30 at cold temperatures, BOTH are thinner than straight 30weight
