Default engine shuts down after big impact while driving..why? please help!

strangely for the first time ever its happened twice in the last week and a half while driving. ill be driving and i hit a violent pothole or something going 30-40 mph and engine shuts down. the first time i was being an idiot and fiddling around with my stereo and hit a curb really hard and violent on a turn to where it jumped up and i was going about 30 or 35 and the engine just shuts off and the check engine light comes on and i loose power, i loose power steering and the steering wheel locks up. second time (just happened) got off the freeway probably going 40 or so and hit a NASTY pothole really hard and the same thing happened. i'm thinking that its just a safety mechanism in case you get in a wreck or something but i'm not sure and it happening in twice in the last week in a half and never happening before has me paranoid. does anybody know?

Don't quote me on this but isn't there a pressure switch under the battery that will do this? Incase it bounces out of the tray?

Could possibly be a loose ground wire but in your case it's more of a blessing than a problem. First you need to learn to pay more attention while driving.

That's a heat sensitive sensor that keeps the battery from over charging.

it sounds to me like a connection somewhere thats loose but still normally in contact, you hit the bump it disconnects long enough to kill the engine, then reseats.

it is NOT normal

@shrpshtr325 thanks ill make sure to check all the wires and everything.

All of mmy electrical stays on fine I just loose engine power and it shuts off but then it fires back up. Its the first time its ever happened just twice this week that's why I'm asking about it

Not sure on the Dodges, but a lot of cars and trucks these days have a deal where it shuts down the fuel pump in a crash. If yours has that, could that be tripping when it thinks there's an impact?

I had a similar problem recently with my 5.9 Ram. It was the coil. I was fighting mutable problems at the time so it took me a while to track it down. After I had every thing ells figured out, it was still dying. Turned out to be the coil. Another thing by the way, in the year that I've owned a Dodge, I found that on electrical stuff the factory parts are the way to go. It cost a little more, but less headache later. I lost money by taking new after market stuff back off and buying OEM.
