Default 4.7 vs 5.9

What are the main differences between these? I keep seeing people put the 4.7 down, and Im curious why.

the 4.7 makes less power than the 5.9, and is a newer engine using newer technology to produce power (actually the same amount of power as the 5.2). There is not a damn thing wrong w/ it except that its a smaller, more efficient engine (o and it lacks the aftermarket support that the 5.9, and 5.2, have available).

if you are looking for a truck to drive every day the 4.7 is the engine to have in it, good power for daily driving and light towing, and very good efficiency, i can get 20mpg highway from mine (yes i have a 4x4)

I find no issues either. I do mostly rural driving, usually get 14ish mpg right now.

As for power, I think it has plenty. No complaints.

Just couldn't understand why so many put it down.

i find it hard to believe in flat camden county you only get 14 mpg(around town driving), im down that low lately(according to my overhead, no clue how close that is to accurate, my last hand calcd number was17) and iv been doing alot of idling meaning that is a lower than normal number for me

I like my Dakota with the 4.7. It has plenty of power and its more fuel efficient than either the 5.2 or the 5.9. And I can get 21 mpg on the highway and I have a 4x4.

I love my 4.7. I have never understood why everyone downs the 4.7. I loved the old 5.2, but really, the 4.7 runs just as well.

From driving, and this may just be in my head, a 2003 Durango 4.7 and driving my 2000 'rango (which has an engine from a '99 Jeep) I feel like my has a little more "pick-up" but still, the '03 had plenty of power.

I drive 15miles a day....7miles to work, 7 miles home. In those 7 miles, I hit about 10 traffic lights. I might as well be in the city.

mike, my commute is similar (8-9 miles each way) with a dozen traffic lights, AND i have to sit in line and idle to get through the gate which they only let you through one person at a time, it sucks, but at least the commute is short enough that the gas bill wont kill anyone . . .

I hear ya. When i DO go on the highway, I love watching my MPG display go up..lol.

I just changed my air filter today, so hopefully it helps the mpg

I have a CAI intake, it was on the truck when I got it. Unfortunately, it's some no named brand with a cone filter on the end, and the point of the filter points towards the firewall instead of the side or front, and with no shield like the K&Ns, it's sucking in hot air from the engine. Not sure who thought of this when they installed it. I just don't have the $300 to blow on a K&N.

you can probably just turn the filter around to point it to the front, however sucking in warm air is better for overall fuel economy than sucking in cold air.
