Just bought a 98 Durango that has popped up with some issues that hopefully someone can lead me to the answers to.

#1 Batteries draining nightly, I have had this thing checked out in the shop and the battery is good and nothing is drawing amps when the trucks off but yet if I leave it out for a night its straight dead in the morning.

#2 My reverse lights will not turn on even after replacing both fixtures,all 6 bulbs & putting a new sensor on the tranny.

#3 My spedometer works on & off, When off the check engine light comes on & when its working it doesnt come on.

I got other problems but ill leave it at this to see what kind of responces I get, and again thanks in advance.

 

#1 make sure they load tested the battery... either there is a bad cell in it out there is something draining it.... and yes it is possible for a bad battery to test good its happend to me several times.

#2 Check to make sure all the wires are in tact.. i had mine get up against the tranny and melt... also check fuses in the PDC under the hood..IRC the backup light feed going in there for some reason.

#3 Replace the rear wheel speed sensor on the rear axle...

What else can we help with?

 

On the battery check your grounds as well, quick way for them to bleed out

 

well I can say without a doubt my battery is fine, no ground issues or dead cells, Its funny cause I left it at the mechanic last night & it started for em in the morning, He says nothings draining off thebattery & is clueless as to why this is happening.

for #2 could you elaborate abit, or just talk to me like im a 3 year old,lol I am by no means car fixer savy, im just trying to shorten the time my truck sits with my mechanic.

#3 we migha hit on cause after I mentioned this to em he was like oh yea their is a sensor on the rear axle & were gonna see if that does the trick for #3

I have another problem I am surprised I didnt post up yesterday cause man is it IRRITATING, but when I pump gas I can only trickly the gas into the tank, this is not a pump issue or adjustment of the nozzle to make it pump faster, this is something not allowing the gas to flow as it should into the tank, for 10 bucks in gas it takes about 10 minutes to fill up with constant on n off pressing of the lever, Ive heard different theories as to why this is, My mechanic could not visually see any kinks in the fuel line coming from te valve, which led him to think selenoid? or however its spelled, thanks again...

 

Old School you nailed it! Rear axle sensors took care of all brake lights on & as well the spedometer so man thank you as xmas card r now in order,lol

I am very interested in what you have to say about the gas issue im having =)

As for the gas issue, there is a stopper between the tank and the top of the filler hole that prevents people from stealing your gas.. perhaps something got stuck there and is not letting alot of fuel enter at one time...

As for #2, since you replaced the switch and it didnt cure the issue, follow the wires as far as you can and make sure the didnt get up on the trans and melt... thats what happend to me.. melted the plug and all..

 

Ok its about to get warm enough for me to crawl under this thing to see if I can determine the reverse lights not working issue, I have all sensors replaced so it has to be the wiring.

My question is with not being able to find the wiring diagram in the manual I got I am wondering where these wires meet from each tail-light? cause if they both dont work id assume the wires gotta be messed up after that point where they meet right?

Also Old School you said by the tranny to check, could you let me know what side? & is it on top ?

Shrps uploaded a bunch of the factory service manuals and their links are in the diy section. Here's the link. It should have all the wiring diagrams you could need.

 

I ended up getting up under their & I couldnt find anything in the wiring that would indicate theirs a fray or break in the wiring, So im confused now as to what direction to go.
