Default heater issues...

2000 durango 2wd 5.2 with AC

We just got this thing from the dealer, and supposedly they did a coolant flush...I'm not convinced cuz theres a lot of things wrong with it that they supposedly had taken care of. in any case, it was pretty obvious to me after we bought it, that we had a heater core leak, because of the awful antifreeze smell. While the thing was at a shop getting some other stuff fixed, they checked out the core and said theres no leak, but that there was some coolant pooled or stuck by the thermostat area and they sprayed it off and checked for other leaks, no leaks. They said it was there most likely because of the dealer's coolant flush.

So, it seems there WAS a flush, BUT the heater only blows kinda warmish, and cold actually on the higher fan settings. Really cold in the rear floor vent. Also, I'm still smelling antifreeze, but not out of the defroster vents, and not really out of the floor vents. Only the dash vents blow coolant, it seems. I am at a loss!

Do I need a core or not? guys said no leaks!
and do I need to flush the system or not? supposed to have had a flush already!

Help appreciated!

Sounds like you need a core.

If you are smelling antifreeze, I'd bet it is leaking at least a little bit. Assuming their story is true and that the A/F got into the compartment by some other means, a core that blows cold is a core with issues. Cores can plug up with rust, Stop-Leak, etc. over time and when they do they stop exchanging hot air. When this happens, leaks are just around the corner.

A good video on how to change your core yourself.
. Not a small job, but doable with a basic set of tools and beer.

Just replaced my core this weekend. Same issue.....blowing cold air. The top hose going into the core was hot, the bottom was not. Mine was not leaking though. Once I finally got the core out I just blew air threw it with my mouth and chunks of black stuff came out. ~12 hour later I have a lot of heat.

Take your time if you do it yourself and good luck. Find Duranged's write up in the DIY section. It is nearly perfect. I have never done anything like this. When my local mechanic told me ~$1000 for installation of a new core and evaporator, I thought it was time to learn.

BTW, if you are in replaceing the core, it might be a good idea to change out the evaporator and blower motor.
