2000 Durango tranny issue
I have a 2000 Durango with a 5.9 motor. I went to put it in reverse the other day and it started grinding to beat hell and went nowhere. I put it in drive and it took right off. When I let off the gas and letting it coast I get the same grinding noise I get when I put it in reverse. Does anyone know what is going on?
Are there any codes coming up on your computer? If so what are they. Also I see you Durango is a 2000. What millage do you have on it? Might be time for a rebuild. Did mine around 300,000km. Is the trany fluid burnt or have any metallic flakes in it? A trans has a ton on moving parts that can go wrong. My first guess tho might be the governor.
It has 210,000 miles but I've only had it for 3 years so I don't know if the tranny has been replaced/rebuilt before. I have not removed the pan yet but the fluid on the dipstick doesn't smell or look burnt to my knowledge. I will check codes and inspect fluid closer tonight. I have also heard nightmare stories about frequent rebuild failures. Would I be better off buying a remanufactured transmission if it does need to be replaced?
Remanufactured is just another way of saying rebuilt but it is someone elses trany. If you get it rebuilt get it done at a place you know and trust. It's not a small job but not the biggest. I had mine done at Dodge and it run me about $1000 with tax and they garanted it for a year.
