Default 99d 46re tranny...down and out..questions

On saturday, after changing the trans fluid+filter(castrol atf+4 synthetic/chrysler approved) because my d(5.9l)was having shifting problems, it has now gotten so bad that i cant drive it. It goes into drive fine, but will not shift outta first, and at times will hit 2500 rpm and it feels like it pops outta gear and revs up to 5000rpms. Then same problem with second..wont shift outta second and feels like it pops outta gear. d1,d2 and reverse all work fine. Goes into nuetral fine also.
Question: does this sound like a major trans rebuild to anyone? And does anyone know of a good dodge transmission build company? Any reviews about hughes? Because i have the shelby d with the supercharger, i think the previous owner beat the hell outta this and im thinking of having a brand new beefier 46re trans put in to handle the sc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive go about $2000-$2500 to spend on tranny. OH...also the fluid during the change was almost black with the magnet completely covered in thin black metal shavings...their were a few(10 or so) metal shavings in the fluid that were floating on top in the catch pan. Help!!!!!

I had this same problem years back when my Durango was under warranty. Dealer had to replace the governor actuators in the tranny to resolve this issue.

@kensai...i see u have a custom built tranny by fastman, do you like it, and what was the price for that, installed? Any idea, although yours was under warranty, how much the dealer would of charged you for that tranny fix?.

I cannot remember the cost of the governor actuators and labor had it not been under warranty. I will have to pull up the invoice. Luckily I kept every invoice/receipt of everything I dropped into my truck. When my tranny was buckling like yours, I only had 38k miles on my speedo at the time and the dealer said it was the governor actuators are shot and they replaced them. Tranny ran fine until around 80k miles which by that time, my truck was no longer under warranty. Reverse gear was dead and tranny bands are messed up. Luckily all forward gears were still working and enough for me to drive it to the shop.

Dealer initially wanted $3200 to replace it. I did not want to take the chance on a oem replacement and coming back to having it rebuilt again based on some of the issues I have seen with the oem rebuild 46re in this forum since I have been a member here. So I decided to have a 3rd party to rebuild the tranny and ensure it is rock solid.

Everyone recommended Fastman known for his Throttle bodies. So I got my tranny replaced by him. Tranny was modded with shift kit, performance upgrades good for 700hp engine. Cost was $1500 plus about $600 for s/h. part of the $600 s/h was that I had to ship my old tranny to him (core swap).

Til this day (125k miles), I love the new tranny. Shifts just a tad rougher than oem, but when you drop the pedal, tranny really put the 5.9 in its power band and I get plowed into my seat! Glad I have AWD, otherwise, the truck would be sitting spinning its wheels.

Dan (Fastman) no longer pardnering with Martin (tranny guy) but left Martin's contact info if you still want to go thru him to rebuild your tranny.

Here is the link to Fastman's site: www.thefastman.com

ok..thnx kensai for all that info. I think I'm leaning towards fastmans tranny since u say its almost bullet proof. Thnx for that link....ill call him tommorrow. Did you pull your old tranny out yourself and install the new one or had a shop do it. I know most tranny shops here in Orlando fl won't install someone elses tranny. I pm'd mastertech here on the forum yesterday and he mentioned installing a trans cooler on these engines..ill go that route too.

I had a friend that owns a shop and he swapped the tranny for me.

I pulled up the invoice for the actuator repair. I remember that this issue had a check engine light on and codes showed the actuators were open.

Transducer 21030410- 50.16
Solenoid 8059043 - 86.40
ATF+4 7.40
Gasket OI 2104003 - 9.56

Total Parts: $190.52
Labor: $87.62

Total Parts and labor: $278.14

Luckily my truck was still under warranty and did not have to pay for this but glad they detailed the repair and added the price of the repair.
