The gearshift cable snapped when we were installling the wheel seals. Had to put it in neutral and it was stuck so we forced it and it snapped. So I ordered on from factory using the VIN and the new one is different from the old one. The new one didn't fit through the hole in the firewall bracket so we filed the hole bigger and now the cable won't stay adjusted.

It's probably not clamped right to the transmission then. The jacket of the cable needs to go into the bracket at the transmission so that just the cable moves and not the jacket and the cable. There should be something similar to that at the gearshifter itself too.

The part that locks onto the tranny doesnt. Fit through the plate hole. We have to make the plate hole bigger.

That's probably the problem. The jacket needs to attach to the bracket at the transmission and at the firewall for it to work properly.

So filing out the hole is the only option. Once that is done it should work fine.

Pretty much unless you wanted to go back and get the right cable. As for which transmission is which (since you seemed unsure in the other thread):

4.7=45RFE trans (545RFE in 03)
5.2=44RE trans
5.9=46RE trans

I am unsure but the guy used my VIN so he should have ordered the correct part. Not waiting another 3 days. Just gonna make this one work.

sometimes computers just simply have the wrong numbers. I dunno how many times i have gone for parts and the correct part was found after searching 1998 RAM 1500 5.2lL!
