Default 1-2 shift at WOT

quick question, 98 5.9 4x4 118xxx miles (says the odometer), while at WOT the transmission will not shift into 2nd gear, will just bounce of rev limiter. let off the gas, tranny will shift into 2nd, normal driving is fine as well. fluid is good, no fishy smell and is full, what needs to be replaced?

thanks in advance.

Id start by adjusting the TV (throttle valve) cable that goes from the throttle body to the transmission. Instructions for adjusting that properly should be over in the service manuals in the diy section. Here's a direct link.

I couldn't tell you. Transmissions with electronics in them are all new to me. Mastertech is a chrysler transmission tech and should be able to help. If he doesn't chime in here shoot him a pm.

I used to have the same problem, I took the first option and adjusted the TV. It is sort of fixed, it doesn't do it 1-2 anymore. Now it does it 2-3 at WOT. But it is weird because it no longer goes to red line it happens between 4.8-5k RPM and it just hesitates to shift, its the weirdest feeling I assure you.

Hope adjusting the TV works fine for you though!

This could be the governor pressure solenoid. That was a common issue, if they wore out it would peg the limiter at WOT. Mine does this too when the trans gets warm, like during towing. I would do the TV cable adjust, change the fluid/filter, and adjust the forward and reverse bands of the transmission.

I don't know anything about going into the tranny and adjusting the bands. id prolly just make it worse if I go into it and start adjusting stuff. Im going to start with a fluid/filter change, being that I already bought a filter because of the bad rep the trannys have. if that don't work then the cable and governer

also what tranny do I have?

5.9 = 46re
5.2 = 44re
4.7 = 45rfe

For some stupid reason the damn forum software keeps changing RE and RFE to lowercase if I capitalize them in the transmission name. WTF?
