Unhappy 98 5.9 no start :/

Hey everybody, I'm new here and bought a Durango for $1000. biggest problem was that it didn't have reverse. I was gonna try adjusting the bands and put a new filter in it. Well before I could do that, it decided to stall coming to a red light. It started right up, but died as soon as I put it in drive. I got it closer to home, about another half mile away, but it was sputtering and backfiring both directions until it just died. its been about 2 weeks since then and it still doesn't start. Cranks with no problem tho. the odometer flashes after about 10 seconds and sometimes the a/c, fuel pump, tranny, and ASD relays all cycle on and off in unison. when I pull the ASD or tranny relay, they all stop. The fuel pump turns on and off with the relay, but that's the only time when it works. Also, there is no spark and the fuel gauge reads empty (3/4 full right now) and the voltmeter reads 8 volts (tests at 12.3 right now). thinking the tranny is the main cause of my problems, maybe the governor pressure sensor shorted out due to slight overheating? I'm kinda stuck. any help is greatly appreciated

A transmission without reverse has some kind of internal issue. sadly that means its time for a rebuild. I just spent the last 9 months pi$$ing around with mine (without reverse) thinking it was something simple. Most likely the clutches are shot.

As far as the other issues, its something electrical for sure.. something is shorting out.. My best guess for over the internet is that there is a wire somewhere that is burnt throw.

Yeah, a rebuild would be nice, but I don't have the money for that. I was thinkin I could find a used tranny and stick that in hoping that it would solve all my issues. While I'm there, I figured I would change the crank sensor too

A used tranny is a decent temp. solution to the issues.. Just be prepaired to be in the same situation later down the road. I personally never seen a used trans last to long.

Not sure what your skill level is but, i just rebuilt my own transmission for under $400 and i am far from a professional tech.

Well after I get a different tranny in, I figured I would rebuild the stock one with stronger internals for future use. I still have to try to find that short too. I'm kinda tired of driving a 91 civic haha. What's weird is that when I would put it in reverse, I felt it go into gear, but it just wouldn't move. another thing is that since it stopped running, I can take it out of park without pushing the brake pedal. Makes me really think my tranny is toast

Your reverse clutches and/or rear band is toast... they don't have anymore material on them to catch when put in reverse. Worst case you will have to replace the reverse drum as well as the clutches are rear band when you rebuild.

Yeah, and that's all fine when the time comes lol. but for now, I gotta figure out why it won't start. A short seems the most probable, and I guess I'll start near the tranny, since that was my trouble spot in the first place

So I changed the crank sensor and no difference. Got a computer from a 99 5.9 and she started right up. Now I have a few codes including a couple cam sensor codes and it doesn't idle well and has some back firing and miss firing. My question is do I have the wrong computer or should I put a can sensor in it?
