Default 4.11 gears

I have a 99 Durango 4wd and I've been looking into regearing it and by my calculations 4.11's will bring it back to the stock final drive ratio. Since mine is 4wd it's going to get a bit spendy but I have a quick question. I have the DJLS 175MM front axle and am I right in saying that is a dana 35? I was looking on Randy's ring and pinion and they only list one front diff for my year and it's a dana 35. I live in North Dakota so I see a lot of snow and I want the ability to have something that is decently fast in a straight line but can also get me out of tough situations, like 2 feet of snow on the interstate. So I'm going with 4.11s with a dura-grip carrier in the rear and if my front diff is a dana 35 I can get a new trac-lok carrier for a same year jeep correct?

I think DJLS was just the build number.

Also, what would I do about the ABS tone wheel? The dura grip doesn't have a built-in one like the stock carrier does.

I hear ya on living in ND, that's why I will never run anything other than an A/T or extreme A/T tire.. The front diff for 98-99 was a dana 35 ifs. Its an aluminum housing . I don't know if a traction device is a good idea, the housings have been know to crack under load with over-sized tires. I don't know how that would go over with any type of traction device, it would definitely be cool to see someone put one in. The jeep 35 is different, the durangos share the same as the explorers/rangers (some ford product, not sure which). The tone ring should unbolt from the old carrier and bolt on to the new one.

Not many places where you see 3 feet of snow on the interstate. The BFGoodrich Mud Terrains deffinately help but a locker would change everything. I'm glad you mentioned the aluminum housing, I did not know it was aluminum. I'm not so sure about a front locker now. But a regular posi carrier in the front would be fine I imagine. I did some looking around and found a couple good threads on the powertrax so thats the route I'm taking for the rear. I'll get the locker in first then save some money for the 4.11 swap next. I kind of want the locker before winter.

Once I put on the duratracs I was passing the gm suv's with factory rear lockers and climbing steeper hills with considerable ease compared to some. I personally have thought about the yukon Dura Grip posi unit. Its fairly reasonable in price and gives and is rebuildable. The thing is I don't want a locker slamming in and out when pulling on slick surfaces, such as a boat ramp. I like the smoothness of a posi is all. They are higher maintenance though.

i would go to 4.56 so hu have the lil extra umoph off the line .

I would love to have 4.56's but I do 20-30 miles of highway driving a day.
