Default 2001 durango driveshaft inter change ?'s

Im looking for a front driveshaft for a 2001 Durango, 4.7 . I was looking on ebay and saw one from a Dakota that has a U-joint in place of the propeller bearing assembly and it says they will interchange. Will this get rid of the propeller part and then just have a u-joint in place of it? Any upside or downsides of doing this? What years will interchange with the 2001 Durango? Is the propeller bearing better to have? This is on the front driveshaft.

I replaced the front driveshaft on my 2003 Durango with one that has a u-joint front and back that I bought off e-bay. I like it and have not had any problems with it.

did yours have that propeller bearing junk on it also? I can move the drive shaft all around right now with the propeller bearing thing, how long have you been running it with the new one?

Yes, my old driveshaft had the propeller bearing junk at the transfer case end. My old driveshaft had come completely loose from the transfer case and was flopping around under my Durango. I believe the new driveshaft is a better design the the original.

when you say "the new design" do you mean dodge made a new design to replace this type? I thought I had read somewhere about them making a conversion driveshaft, kinda like saying the propeller shaft was a bad idea or something.

My driveshaft was from a driveshaft place (in Nebraska if I remember correctly) and was not from Dodge. I don't think Dodge has changed their design. I saw several of the original design driveshafts on ebay when I ordered mine. Some said they were OEM.

ok, I was just thinking I read somewhere about a conversion drive shaft or something, my girlfriends is an 01 and the only one to fit are 01- 03 with the propeller shaft but in Dakotas it goes from 01- 05, I want to switch it over like you have done but I cant get her to let me. lol
